A TEMPEST OF ROSES

I had never known the world to be so big.
I had never known myself to be so small.

Aquinnah Bree, author of A Tempest of Roses

As long as I was here, I had something to prove to myself and anyone who dared to rise against me—my power was good.
And so was I.

All my independence had ever earned me was a deep and lasting guilt, but her freedom had led her here. To the place where the sky met the sea. My bones cried out, singing that one taste was not enough. I wanted the real thing. And all I had to do was—
“Give me your hand,” she said.

And just when I thought we couldn’t get any closer, he dropped his lips to my ear and whispered, “Is it wrong of me to hope that you stay here forever?”

Like a conductor before his orchestra, I was one with the song of the wind.

A Tempest of Roses by Aquinnah Bree

Smile when it hurts. Tell the convenient truth. Don’t disrupt the oligarchy—no matter what.

These are the rules by which Lady Analora was raised, the rules that protect her family and its legacy. They protect her baby sister, Sophia—until the night her faulty heart stops beating. Face to face with death, Analora writes a new rule: anything for Sophia. But it isn’t the oligarchy that responds to her command—it’s the wind. Quick and cold and life-giving. Sophia wakes.

Determined to gain full control of the wind, Analora grows more powerful than her parents ever could’ve imagined. Fearful of her gift, they send her away, across the mountains and to the home of her long-lost cousin, Princess Zana.

All Analora wants is a chance to prove that she and her power are good. When she’s given an opportunity to foster peace between her cousin’s kingdom of Aysu and the neighboring valley of Akemi, she accepts it without question. But the Akemians desire more than empty goodwill. With the help of her newfound family members and the disarming captain of their guard, Analora must tear down the walls of her old life and allow light and truth to show her the way home.

About the Author

Aquinnah Bree has been a storyteller since before she could actually speak English words. She moved across the United States three times before she turned 12, an experience that taught her the value of feeling at home.

Though she spent her early teens training to be a ballerina, nothing could keep Aquinnah from her writing. Her sixth-grade language arts teacher recognized and cultivated that passion until she was bubbling over with words.

When she was nearly 13, Aquinnah sat down to write the book that would eventually become A Tempest of Roses. She was nearly 24 when, while singing with one of her teachers, she found the courage to let it go.

Aquinnah is a Praxis alumna and works with clients to help them bring their stories to life. Always exploring the definition of home, you can usually find her somewhere between Colorado and the East Coast. Besides writing, she enjoys walking in the sunshine, making music, dancing, and trying new soup recipes.
