I often talk about my go-to re-centering line, “Be here now.” It does wonders for my state of mind, helping me to regain headspace and remain in a constant state of gratefulness.

But what if the here and now is a chaotic disaster area of unfinished projects, one too many commitments and circumstances outside of your control?

We’ve all been there. That was me just this morning. And, unfortunately, I didn’t want to be there. How could I? So, I started to sing.

I hardly pass for a shower singer. But music is a powerful tool, and I find it especially helpful in situations where, in order to find peace, I need to divert my attention away from the chaos. Sometimes, the stream of Bon Jovi lyrics in my head does the trick. Other times, I take the first words that come to mind and sing them aloud.

So, when technical difficulties threw me off course this morning and I couldn’t think of the words to any pre-existing song, I made up my own. I’ve been humming it for hours, and now, I want to share it with you. These are the lyrics exactly as they entered my mind.  Whether you sing them to your own tune or read them as a poem, I hope that they bring you some peace today. xx

When I walk through the valley of darkness
You are standing by my side
With Your arms entwined around me
And Your voice inside my mind
You say, “You’re stronger than before.
Come and ask Me for more.
And when you’re far too tired to rest
Just know: this is not a test.”
