I have hundreds of favorite songs. As a dancer, it’s hard not to love music. In fact, I think it’s pretty much impossible.

As a writer, there are still more songs that make me say, “Yes. I get that.” Mostly while listening to Bon Jovi. There are some songs that just get you. They put into words all of the emotions that are impossible to express in conversation.

Today, I want to share a few lines from some of my favorite songs, lines that can only be described as “real” as they put human nature into music. Make of them what you will. That’s the best part about listening to music, after all.

I ain’t throwing stones, got sins of my own
Ain’t everybody just trying to find a way home
– Bon Jovi, “Happy Now”

We got language so we can’t communicate
Religion so I can love and hate
Music so I can exaggerate my pain
And give it a name
– U2, “The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)”

Who says you can’t go back?
I been all around the world and as a matter of fact
There’s only one place left I wanna go
Who says you can’t go home?
– Bon Jovi, “Who Says You Can’t Go Home”

I am scared to death of taking a wrong turn
Peace is something nobody can earn
There is no chance now of losing, when you’ve given me your love
You healed the disease I was dying of
– JJ Heller, “Daylight”

Somewhere in the world, they think they’re working for themselves
They get up every day to go to work for someone else
And somebody works for them and, so, they think they got it made
But they’re all just working to get paid the very same
– Sabrina Carpenter, “Thumbs”

Cause the greatest risk we’ll ever take is by far
To stand in the light and be seen as we are
– Jordan Smith, “Stand In The Light”

We are how we treat each other and nothing more
– The Alternate Routes (feat. Lily Costner), “Nothing More”

I need a silent night, a holy night
To hear an angel voice through the chaos and the noise
I need a midnight clear, a little peace right here
To end this crazy day with a silent night
– Amy Grant, “I Need a Silent Night”
