Can we all agree that TV peaked right around the West Wing/Gilmore Girls era? Cool. I’m glad we got that out of the way.

I won’t lie to you. I had a plan for this post, but since waking up at 6 AM and writing my way through another day of work, I’m feeling rather sleepy. Like, curl up on the couch and watch When Calls the Heart until I can’t keep my eyes open anymore sleepy. It must be the weather. So much rain.

Is it really July 27th? That’s just wild. I’m still trying to soak up summer and pretending that autumn will never come. I always do this even though I love autumn because, as you’ve probably noticed, I have very strange coping mechanisms for dealing with change.

I really do have an update for you, so let’s get to that.

When it comes to writing, while I have a lot I could say, there’s only one bit of news that’s about to change my game, news that can be summed up in a single word: time.

My apprenticeship with The Mission will come to a close on August 6, at which point I’ll be taking a little vacation to breathe, recenter, and prepare for the next season of my life. I don’t know where I’m going or what I’ll find, but I do know one thing: I’ll be bringing as little tech as possible. So, obviously, my Kindle is coming with me.

When I return home, there will be two major differences in my workflow. 1) I will finally have time to dedicate solely to the editing of my debut novel (Edit 20/27, here I coooome!), and 2) I’ll be taking on all other writing projects as a freelancer.

I’m out of words to describe how excited I am to be able to work at this new pace, directly alongside you. If you’re looking for a proofreader, an editor or a writer to assist with your articles, blog posts, direct response emails, websites, short stories or newsletters, feel free to shoot me a message here, and I’ll get back to you with a quote within 48 business hours. I look forward to working with you!

In other news, I’m reading through a Praxis favorite, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenence by Robert M. Pirsig, and it is blowing my mind. I have to go over every page about six times before the words fully absorb. I’ve made dozens upon dozens of highlights, but most of them are stuck on my old Kindle 2, so here’s what’s happening on my new Kindle Fire HD 8 (LOVE OF MY LIFE):

  • “Here, in college, it was more sophisticated, of course; you were supposed to imitate the teacher in such a way as to convince the teacher you were not imitating, but taking the essence of the instruction and going ahead with it on your own. That got you A’s. Originality on the other hand could get you anything–from A to F. The whole grading system cautioned against it.” pg. 172
  • “To live only for some future goal is shallow. It’s the sides of the mountain which sustain life, not the top. Here’s where things grow.” pg. 183
  • “Any effort that has self-glorification as its final endpoint is bound to end in disaster.” pg. 189
  • “He rejects the here, is unhappy with it, wants to be farther up the trail but when he gets there will be just as unhappy because then it will be ‘here.’ What he’s looking for, what he wants, is all around him, but he doesn’t want that because it is all around him.” pg 190
  • “When you learn not to do ‘just what you like’ then the System loves you.” pg. 209
  • “Quality isn’t something you lay on top of subjects and objects like tinsel on a Christmas tree. Real Quality must be the source of the subjects and objects, the cone from which the tree must start.” pg. 263
  • “Gumption is the psychic gasoline that keeps the whole thing going. If you haven’t got it there’s no way the motorcycle can possibly be fixed. But if you have got it and know how to keep it there’s absolutely no way in this whole world that motorcycle can keep from getting fixed.” pg. 273

Suffice it to say that you probably want to read it for yourself.

And hey, have a beautiful weekend. xx
