Kindness is magic.

Unfortunately, acting cold is usually easier than being kind.

It’s easy to lose confidence in the people around us with facts like that, so today, I want to share six quotes that always manage to restore my faith in humanity.

“I think I realized that I would rather die because I betrayed them, than live because I betrayed you.” – Marissa Meyer, Scarlet

Loyalty at it’s finest right here. Marissa Meyer is known for creating believably complex characters and relationships, and Scarlet and Wolf, who speaks this line, are no exception. If you don’t feel a surge of gratefulness for your friends after reading this… it can’t hurt to read it again.

“My nature has always been to fight. My faith forces me to forgive.” – Cindy Martinusen-Coloma, Caleb + Kate

We all make mistakes and wish to be forgiven, but what about forgiving others? No matter how impossible it feels sometimes, we are all capable of forgiveness. This quote reminds me of that.

“Everyone gets scared at times. It’s only the fools who won’t admit it.” – Jennifer A. Nielsen, The Runaway King

It’s okay to admit it. Fear is human. It’s how we handle our fear that makes or breaks us. You can read about how I deal with mine here, here and here.

“You must remember, family is often born of blood, but it doesn’t depend on blood. Nor is it exclusive of friendship. Family members can be your best friends, you know. And best friends, whether or not they are related to you, can be your family.” – Trenton Lee Stewart, The Mysterious Benedict Society

Isn’t this beautiful? We have the capacity to make the people around us a part of our family. We are not alone.

“Some mistakes… just have greater consequences than others. But you don’t have to let the result of one mistake be the thing that defines you.” – Jojo Moyes, Me Before You

The way you define yourself is often the way that others define you. As Bon Jovi asked, “Is who you think you are who you want to be?” Restoring your faith in humanity can be as simple as restoring your faith in yourself.

“I keep thinking about a tale my nurse used to read to me about a bird whose wings are pinned to the ground. In the end, when he finally frees himself, he flies so high he becomes a star. My nurse said the story was about how we all have something that keeps us down.” – Shannon Hale, Princess Academy

Just imagine yourself, your family members, your friends and all of the people that you have yet to meet and love as stars, lighting up the night sky with your joy, kindness and passion.

Don’t you feel better?
